29/10/09 Hurst lane c20 Blackbirds in hedge 3 Redwing 3 Bullfinch 10 Greenfinch 4 Goldfinch 2 G.S.W.
Waingate c25 mixed Gold & Greenfinches atop the ash tree. c100 flock of Fieldfare flew over low with a handfull of Redwings c70 flock Starlings in fields 60 B.H.Gull overhead
Min. of 200 Jackdaw seen from Marl Pits over Cowpe. the whole flock towered very high then dropped, after which they headed around Cowpe Lowe and Whinberry Naze presumably heading to roost lower down the valley. Somewhere below Stubbins there is a very large Jackdaw roost - anybody aware of it?
Not too sure about that. Earlier this year we had them heading S. over Strongstry but not that high up, so you might be out of sight of them at that altitude. Maybe the opposite side of the valley may be better (I'm just trying to visualise the lie of the land) or Stubbins bridge - who knows. Sorry, thats not that helpfull its a case of suck it & see. Bob.
Took a walk up Turn. In field between Rochdale Rd & Bury Old Rd:- Approx 100 birds feeding, roughly 25 Starlings, 75 Fieldfare & 3 MistleThrush for good measure. One of Fieldfare was very red breasted, almost thought I'd got an American Robin, don't think it was, not my luck!!
Watched the valley from just beyond Bleakholt. 30 Jackdaws and 27 Rooks feeding in field they are normally in. When Jackdaws took off they headed straight for stubbins, then kept going through Rammy & I lost sight of them around Nuttall Park. May have been able to see them from Holcome Village, but that's for another day.
Almost forgot... 1 group, double figures of TLT's in Hollins Lane.
