06:00-15:30.
A great day for the Bird Race and four teams of two took part. After 9.5  hours birding just 5 species seperated all the teams and a grand total of 74 species were seen which is the same total as last year and the second highest number ever. Results were:

Team A = 61,
Team B = 65,
Team C = 66,
Team D = 66.
Grand Total = 74 species.

Highlights were:

little Grebe, pair with chicks,
Mute Swan, pair nesting, very unusual for Rossendale,
Goosander, female,
Coot, pair with 6 young,
Oystercatcher, pair,
Lapwing, c20,
Snipe, 2,
Curlew, c3/4 pairs,
Common Sandpiper, only 1 location this year!
Stock Dove, c5,
Little Owl, 1,
Green Woodpecker, at least 3,
G.S.Woodpecker, c5,
Skylark, c20,
Sand Martin, 2/3, low this year!
Dipper, 1 juv,
Stonechat, sev inc 3 juvs,
Wheatear, 2/3,
Sedge Warbler, at least 3 singing birds,
Whitethroat, at least 2 singing birds,
Spotted Flycatcher, 1 location,
Nuthatch, pair feeding juvs,
Treecreeper, 2,
Linnet, c6,
Redpoll, singing birds,
Bullfinch, 3/4,

That's a pretty good score, David. Interesting to see Mute Swan breeding again after such a while.

Did you have a good butterfly list as well?  I had Painted Ladies and Red Admiral over here on Saturday.

Hi Jim,
Butterflies were much in evidence with the following seen as a minimum:

Painted Lady c50,
Red Admiral 1,
Orange Tip, c10,
Whites, c20,
Small Heath, c6,
Small Copper, 1.
